Cancer patients in Eastern Visayas are now eagerly anticipating the completion of a new regional cancer center at the Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVMC), now slated for completion by 2026.

In a recent interview with local media, EVMC chief of hospital Joseph Michael Jaro said the projected completion of the P2.5-billion cancer center is two years earlier than the 2028 national target.

“The Cancer Center project is targeted to be completed by the third to fourth quarter of 2026 with the Health Facilities Enhancement Program investments. We want this done by 2026 since we cannot wait for another two years,” Jaro told reporters.

He said the project’s phase 1 is almost complete, which will fast-track the work for the phase 2, while phase 3 and the bunker facility, which will house the radiotherapy bunker room to be equipped with a medical linear accelerator used primarily to treat cancer, will start soon.

“In Eastern Visayas, we have many needs when it comes to cancer, and we are closing those gaps. There’s a big chance of recovering if patients are given early treatment,” he said.

EVMC is currently treating around 3,000 patients through a shared cancer care facility for the region, currently offering inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy, multidisciplinary consultations, and palliative care.

About half of cancer patients in the region have breast cancer, according to Jaro.

The absence of cancer centers in the region prompts patients to seek care in Cebu or Metro Manila while several cases remain undetected.

“Cancer detection is more critical than cancer management. The aim of this center is to cover the entire region. Through this, there will be better data collection and better reach to patients,” the official added.
