NCAA overruled Mapua’s win over San Beda in opening game after fielding Gab Gamboa who is found to be ineligible for S98 as per NCAA rules.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) overturned the opening-day win of Mapua University over San Beda University, 66-55, for fielding an ineligible player in Gab Gamboa.
The NCAA Management Committee found Gamboa to be ineligible for NCAA 98 last September 10 as he was still enrolled at St. Clare College of Caloocan, where he was part of the champion team that reigned NAASCU in June, before transferring to Mapua before the opening of the season.
In a memorandum, the NCAA management committee has already informed league commissioner Tonichi Pujante of its decision.
"The ManCom, after investigation, found out that Mapua University (MU) player Gabriel Dan Gamboa, who played last September against San Beda University (SBU) where MU won, was ineligible to play," the letter read.
"In view thereof, as a penalty, for such a violation, MU forfeits its game against SBU. SBU, therefore, won that game."
Pujante also revealed that Gamboa has been banned for life from playing in the NCAA.
Gamboa will then culminate his NCAA career with just two points and one rebound in seven minutes and 30 seconds of play in Mapua’s victory.
This would mean that Mapua’s slate of 1-5 will drop to a winless 0-6 record, while San Beda, who picked up their third win last Friday against Colegio de San Juan de Letran, will now have a 4-1 record.
Since the fiasco, Gambo has been dropped from the Cardinals’ roster as revealed by head coach Randy Alcantara on September 18, adding that the issue did not contribute in any way to Mapua's struggles this season.
However, coach Alcantara chose not to expound on the situation, saying that matters were being worked on during that time.
Sources have now reported that Gamboa has returned to St. Clare.
