In a significant move following prolonged deliberations, the transport sector in Iloilo has reached an agreement to allow 40 percent of traditional jeepney units from border towns to enter the city loop during peak hours.

This decision, prompted by a request from transport cooperatives of the first town and intervention by Gov. Arthur Defensor, Jr., aims to address concerns raised by both commuters and jeepney drivers.

Under the arrangement, 40 percent of first-town jeepneys will operate along their regular routes from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a reduced percentage during off-peak hours.

Governor Defensor emphasized the importance of this decision, highlighting the integral role of first towns as extensions of Iloilo City, with many residents being part of the city's workforce.

Transport Holiday

The Iloilo City Traffic Management Unit (ICTMU) previously approved a similar entry rate, with provisions to maintain traffic flow and protect the interests of city transport cooperatives.

However, concerns arose regarding longer waiting times at terminals and stopovers since the implementation of the enhanced local public transport route plan on May 27. Jeepney drivers staged a "transport holiday" to draw attention to their challenges.

Governor Defensor convened a meeting with key stakeholders to address these concerns and ensure a balanced approach. He also committed to following up on the province's transport plan at the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for swift approval.

The agreement underscores the collaborative effort between the city and provincial governments, transport cooperatives, and regulatory bodies to find solutions that benefit all stakeholders.

Moving forward, regular monitoring and adjustments will be made to ensure the smooth implementation of the transport plan, reflecting a commitment to responsiveness and efficiency in Iloilo's transportation sector.
