Titled “Pambansang Museo sa Barangay: Bringing the Museum Collections to the Fringes”, the National Museum of the Philippines - Western Visayas project aims to bring select museum collections to urban poor and rural communities.

If the children can’t come to the museums, the museum will come to them.

The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) has received an International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) grant to create a travelling exhibition for the Western Visayas urban poor communities.

From November 17 to December 15, 2021, NMP Western Visayas Regional Museum will be bringing select museum collections to urban poor and rural communities.

Titled “Pambansang Museo sa Barangay: Bringing the Museum Collections to the Fringes”, the project is a partnership between ICCROM and supported by the Cultural Heritage Administration of the Republic of Korea.

According to the NMP, the travelling exhibition will feature 5 museum boxes that include the Oton Gold Death Mask, Elephant/Stegodont Fossil Molars from Panay, hablon and piña textiles, and replica specimens of endangered plants and animals.

Each box represents the exhibitions from the National Museum Western Visayas in Iloilo Provincial Capitol Complex, Bonifacio Drive, Iloilo City.

While the NMP have staged similar travelling exhibitions before the pandemic, the tour will uniquely serve communities at the village level.

“It offers alternative and safe learning and cultural experiences to the public, especially the youth in impoverished communities, whose mobility is restricted during this pandemic,” NMP said in its post.

Engagement will also be encouraged for educational and therapeutic activities.

The travelling exhibition will have activities for different age brackets.

The activities will revolve around the five museum boxes such as mask-making, fossil-imprinting, coloring for kids and adults, leaf and rock art workshop, and other paper-based activities.

The travelling exhibition will be piloted in Iloilo City, subject to the government-imposed movement restrictions in the area. If successful, NMP will push through with the target of bringing the project to rural communities.
