An unattended baggage with nearly P2-million cash was found by an airport security guard at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said on Tuesday, July 25.

Airport authorities said security officer Mahmud Mastul, 34, was doing his duty rounds on Friday, July 21, when he noticed a suitcase just lying there at the arrival greeters area.

Immediately, Mastul reported this to his superior and sought assistance from the MIAA Police and the PNP Aviation Security Group who promptly responded and cleared the luggage of "any threat to security."

According to the MIAA, the suitcase, which also contained jewelry, was turned over to the MIAA Lost and Found Section for proper inventory and documentation in the presence of witnesses.

After an inventory was conducted, the MIAA contacted the owner, identified as Miguel Carpio, who went back to the airport to claim his belongings.

Mastul said this is the first time that he was able to find a bag with valuable items. He was a security guard in NAIA since 2016.

Mastul said whether it's a big or a small thing, "you have to surrender it because it's not yours. That item must be returned to the rightful owner."

"Mr. Mastul's display of honesty by promptly reporting the incident not only sets a good example to his colleagues but also proves that our efforts to promote integrity and professionalism among airport workers is gaining ground from all levels of service," MIAA Officer in Charge Bryan Co said.
