New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) general manager Angelito Alvarez said that his team is in the process of preparing to assume control of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on September 14.

The NNIC of the San Miguel Corp.-led consortium, headed by its CEO Ramon Ang, is responsible for the rehabilitation and modernization of the Philippines' premier airport.

It is also committed to transforming NAIA into a gateway that complies with international standards and reflects the distinct essence of the Philippines.

Alvarez was named commissioner of the Bureau of Customs in July 2010.

Prior to that role, he has occupied a number of positions such as head of the Philippine Basketball Association, chief executive officer of Airfreight 2100 Inc., and board member of the Association of Freight Forwarders of the Philippines.

He also served as one of the senior executives at Philippine Airlines (PAL).

"We recognize the enormous responsibility that lies on our shoulders. Yet we are committed to transforming NAIA into a gateway that not only meets international standards but also embodies the unique spirit of the Philippines. An airport that every Filipino can take pride in, one that truly reflects the warmth, beauty, and resilience of our nation," Alvarez said during the induction of officers of Airport Press Club at Bayleaf Hotel in Intramuros, Manila on Wednesday, May 8.

Two months ago, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and NNIC entered into a concession agreement for the rehabilitation and modernization of the Philippines' premier airport.

The NNIC will enhance the airport's functionality and establish a new standard in serving excellence.

The NAIA Public-Private Partnership Project (PPP) signals the viability of government infrastructure projects to the international business community.

Once completed, the airport is expected to improve services and infrastructure, increase passenger capacity from 35 million to 62 million annually, and boost economic growth and tourism arrivals.
