The newly-refurbished domestic airport is expected to improve air traffic at NAIA.

After a year of undergoing rehabilitation and repair, the domestic runway at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is once again open for air traffic.

Transportation officials said Runway 12/31 at NAIA, which mostly caters to short- to medium-range aircraft is back in business.

Connie Bunag of the Manila International Airport Authority public affairs office said the reopening of the runway will reduce traffic congestion at the airport in time for the gradual reopening of air routes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bunag added that the slowdown of air traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic enabled the contractors to speed up the rehabilitation works on the domestic runway.

These included repairs on the deteriorated asphalt pavement areas, asphalt overlaying works for the entire runway pavement and exit connections, and painting of runway pavement markers and guidelines. (JV)
