As part of preventive measures against the spread of African swine fever (ASF), the provincial government of Northern Samar has prohibited the movement of live pigs and pork products in three towns in three towns in the province.

These towns include Las Navas, Catubig, and Laoang, which are now subject to quarantine checkpoints according to Executive Order No. 25-02-01, signed by Governor Edwin Ongchuan on February 10.

Aside from the establishment of checkpoints, the provincial and municipal ASF task forces are reactivated, and quarantine checkpoints, led by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), will be established in every municipality with support from the municipal agriculture office, police, and local task forces, according to the provincial government.

Shipments without complete documents but deemed fit for consumption will be returned to their point of origin, while those showing ASF symptoms will be confiscated and disposed of, with all costs shouldered by violators.

“The transport of live pigs, fresh or frozen pork, and processed pork products will only be allowed with proper documentation, including veterinary health certificates and official receipts from authorized sellers,” according to the provincial government.

The PVO recommended the movement restriction following an increase in unusual swine deaths after recent flooding last month.

Investigations on January 22 to 23, 2025 and subsequent testing by the Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed the ASF cases in Las Navas on January 24.

The findings prompted an emergency meeting with the provincial ASF task force and municipal agriculturists to implement control measures.

Ongchuan urged all stakeholders to cooperate with authorities and comply with biosecurity protocols to protect Northern Samar’s swine industry and prevent further economic losses.
