COMMUTERS can expect faster and more convenient train rides after Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) added 25 newly overhauled trains.

MRT-3 officials said the newly-overhauled cars underwent successful speed tests before their deployment to ensure operational safety.

Launched in 2019, the comprehensive rehabilitation and maintenance of the MRT-3 aim to restore the train line to its “high-grade design condition.”

In addition to overhauling all of MRT-3's 72 Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs), maintenance provider Sumitomo-MHI-TESP is also tasked to replace all mainline tracks, rehabilitate power and overhead catenary systems, upgrade signaling, communications and CCTV systems.

The company is also tasked to fix all of MRT-3's escalators and elevators, among other system repairs and improvements.

Repairs and maintenance works for MRT-3 have been going on despite the pandemic.

The rail replacement works were completed in September 2020.

In December 2020, MRT-3 boosted its operating speed to 60 kph from 30 kph.

According to the agency, travel time from North Avenue to Taft Avenue station was shortened to 50 minutes from the previous 1 hour and 15 minutes.
