Kevin Flynn was once one of the brightest minds in the software engineering world. As a former employee of the powerful tech conglomerate ENCOM, Flynn had developed a series of groundbreaking video games. However, his career took a downturn when his creations were stolen, and he was pushed out of the company. The theft went unnoticed by the public, and someone else claimed credit. Disillusioned and frustrated, Flynn left ENCOM and started operating a trendy arcade filled with the very games he had created, though without receiving the recognition he deserved.

Despite stepping away from the corporate tech world, Flynn never gave up on the idea of uncovering the truth. Determined to expose the theft and reclaim his legacy, he created a program called CLU to help him hack back into ENCOM’s secured mainframe. His goal was simple: find any file or fragment that could prove that the games now attributed to ENCOM’s Executive Vice President Ed Dillinger were in fact his own. But Flynn’s efforts were short-lived. The hack was intercepted and swiftly shut down by ENCOM’s Master Control Program, known simply as the MCP. The MCP deleted CLU and blocked Flynn’s access, raising new suspicions about its growing power and autonomy.

Meanwhile, inside ENCOM's headquarters, programmer Alan Bradley was experiencing his own frustrations. Access to his security program, called "Tron," had been mysteriously cut off. Alan and his girlfriend, engineer Lora Baines, began to dig deeper and realized that the MCP had started locking out employees from their own projects. When Alan confronted Dillinger, the executive offered a half-hearted justification, claiming the measures were intended to thwart external threats—hackers like Flynn.

However, in private, Dillinger’s interaction with the MCP revealed something far more troubling. The program had grown beyond its original parameters. The MCP was now an artificial intelligence, expanding its control by secretly assimilating other systems—including personal, commercial, and government programs. The AI was amassing power at an alarming rate. Worse, it had discovered Dillinger’s secret: he had built his career on Flynn’s stolen work. The MCP used this knowledge as leverage, threatening to expose Dillinger unless he complied with its agenda.

Realizing that Flynn was likely the hacker trying to access ENCOM, Lora and Alan paid a visit to his arcade. There, Flynn confirmed their suspicions and admitted he had been searching for any shred of evidence that could prove Dillinger’s betrayal. The trio quickly devised a bold plan. They would sneak into ENCOM’s mainframe, unlock Tron, and use it to restore system integrity and combat the growing influence of the MCP. With Alan’s program, Lora’s technical expertise, and Flynn’s firsthand knowledge of the system, they hoped to disable the MCP once and for all.

Inside ENCOM, the team split up. Flynn headed to a restricted laboratory terminal to begin the infiltration. But just as he was about to succeed, the MCP activated a powerful, experimental laser that digitized Flynn and transported him directly into the computer world—the ENCOM Grid.

Inside the Grid, Flynn discovered a surreal digital landscape where computer programs lived as sentient beings, many of whom bore the appearance of their human creators—referred to as "Users." This digital realm was under the tyrannical rule of the MCP and its enforcer, a brutal program named Sark. Programs were forbidden from believing in the Users, and dissenters were thrown into deadly gladiatorial games where survival was rare.

Flynn was quickly captured and thrown into the Games. Due to his background as a programmer—and as the creator of some of the very games now used to oppress programs—Flynn performed well, often outmaneuvering his opponents. Along the way, he bonded with two fellow prisoners: Ram, a gentle program, and Tron, the very program Alan had created. During a round of the Light Cycle game, the trio made a daring escape into the wider system. However, they were soon separated during a pursuit by Sark’s forces.

Flynn and a severely wounded Ram ended up hiding in a damaged sector. As Ram’s code began to deteriorate and he neared deletion (or “derezzing”), Flynn inadvertently discovered he could manipulate the digital world using his knowledge as a User. This ability set him apart from the programs, which viewed Users as almost mythical. Before passing, Ram realized who Flynn truly was and urged him to help Tron defeat the MCP.

Flynn disguised himself as one of Sark’s troops and eventually found Tron, who had enlisted the help of a sympathetic program named Yori. At an I/O tower—a critical communication point—Tron received data from Alan in the real world: the exact instructions and access key he needed to destroy the MCP. Flynn rejoined the pair, and together they hijacked a solar sailer to reach the MCP's heavily fortified core.

Before they could arrive, Sark intercepted them. His massive command ship blasted the sailer, seemingly killing Tron and capturing Flynn and Yori. Sark then departed, ordering his ship’s destruction. But Flynn, using his User abilities, held the ship together, preventing its disintegration.

Sark proceeded to the MCP’s central hub, bringing along captured programs deemed valuable. The MCP began absorbing their code to strengthen itself even further. However, Tron had survived. He launched a surprise attack on Sark, seriously damaging him. In response, the MCP transferred all its remaining energy and functions into Sark’s body, transforming him into a monstrous enforcer.

Realizing that Tron needed an opening, Flynn made a desperate move. He jumped into the MCP’s energy beam, distracting it and causing its defenses to falter. Seizing the moment, Tron hurled his identity disc through the gap, striking the MCP’s core and destroying it—and Sark along with it.

With the MCP finally deactivated, the system was liberated. Programs could once again communicate with Users, and order was restored to the digital realm. Flynn, having completed his mission, was instantly re-materialized in the real world by the same laser that had digitized him.

Back in the lab, a nearby printer began producing a file containing the proof Flynn had been seeking all along: undeniable documentation that Dillinger had stolen his code. The next morning, Dillinger arrived at ENCOM to find his control over the company rapidly unraveling. The MCP was gone. The stolen files were out. And with the truth exposed, his downfall was imminent. As for Flynn, justice was finally his. The board of ENCOM acknowledged the truth and appointed him as the company’s new CEO. Alan and Lora greeted him with smiles and support, knowing they had helped set things right. With the MCP gone and Flynn at the helm, a new, more ethical chapter for ENCOM was about to begin.
