Mamma Mia (2008)

On the sun-drenched, fictional Greek island of Kalokairi—named after the Greek word for "summer"—a sense of excitement fills the air. Sophie Sheridan, a spirited young woman in her twenties, is preparing for the most important day of her life: her wedding. But amid the joy and anticipation, Sophie is holding onto a closely guarded secret. Raised by her free-spirited mother Donna, who never revealed the identity of her biological father, Sophie has grown up wondering about the man who gave her life. Now, on the eve of her wedding, she’s determined to find out.

With nothing more than Donna’s old diary as a clue, Sophie has discovered the names of three men who were romantically involved with her mother around the time of her conception: Sam Carmichael, an Irish-American architect; Bill Anderson, a Swedish travel writer; and Harry Bright, a reserved British banker. Believing one of them must be her father, Sophie takes a bold step. Without telling Donna, she secretly invites all three men to the wedding, hoping that when she meets them, she’ll know in her heart who her father is. She dreams of being walked down the aisle by him, finally solving the mystery that has loomed over her entire life.

The men arrive on the island, each unaware of the others’ presence—or the real reason they’ve been invited. Sophie greets them warmly and quickly explains that she, not Donna, sent the invitations. However, she stops short of revealing that one of them might be her father. Instead, she convinces them to hide out in an old goat house on the property to keep their presence a surprise until the right moment.

Meanwhile, Donna—busy renovating the goat house—stumbles upon the three men from her past. She is completely blindsided. Overwhelmed with confusion and emotion, she demands they leave immediately. Reeling from the unexpected reunion, Donna turns to her lifelong best friends, the glamorous Tanya and the eccentric Rosie, who have arrived for the wedding as well. Tearfully, she confesses that she truly doesn’t know which of the three men fathered Sophie.

Sophie later finds Sam, Bill, and Harry relaxing aboard Bill’s sailboat. They sail around the island, sharing laughs, memories, and stories of Donna's carefree youth. The men begin to feel a deep fondness for Sophie, each sensing a paternal connection, and she relishes this unexpected bond. She considers coming clean to her fiancé Sky about the entire plan, but when the moment comes, she falters, afraid of how he might react.

That night, the island bursts into celebration for Sophie’s lively bachelorette party. Donna is visibly distressed by the presence of her former lovers, but Tanya and Rosie assure her that they’ll handle the situation. During the party, Sophie finds a moment alone with each man. These quiet conversations stir old memories and awaken new emotions in the men, who begin to question the true reason for their invitation. Bill, in particular, shares that his late great-aunt Sofia had once given Donna the money to purchase the villa they now call home. This revelation leads Sophie to believe that Bill must be her father. Elated, she asks him to give her away at the wedding—but begs him to keep it a secret until the ceremony.

Her joy is short-lived. Later that evening, both Sam and Harry separately approach Sophie, each convinced that he is her real father and offering to walk her down the aisle. Sophie, overwhelmed and confused, begins to realize the enormity of the situation she’s created.

The next morning, as wedding preparations begin, Donna senses that something is wrong. She gently offers to call off the wedding if Sophie is unsure, but Sophie lashes out. She insists that she doesn't want to repeat her mother's mistakes—an outburst that leaves Donna heartbroken. In a quiet moment, Sam finds Donna and tries to talk about the wedding. Their exchange is strained at first, but it quickly becomes clear that their old feelings have never truly faded.

Eventually, Sophie confesses everything to Sky—the invitations, the secret, the confusion over who her father is. She pleads for his understanding and help, but Sky feels betrayed by her deception and storms off, unsure of how to move forward.

Later, mother and daughter find solace in each other. Donna shares a deeply personal story: how she was disowned by her own mother when she became pregnant, and how she had to raise Sophie on her own. Despite the pain and struggle, Donna tells Sophie that having her was the best decision she ever made. Moved by her mother’s vulnerability and strength, Sophie asks Donna to give her away at the wedding instead.

As the sun sets and the guests gather at the island chapel, Donna, dressed in flowing white, prepares for the ceremony. Just before the bridal procession begins, Sam intercepts her. In a raw and emotional conversation, he reveals that he had broken off his engagement to be with her years ago—but when he returned, Donna had already left with another man. Donna, too, confesses the heartache of losing him.

Inside the chapel, the ceremony begins. As Sophie stands before the altar, the truth about her father remains unresolved. But in an unexpected moment of clarity and connection, the three men tell her that they don’t need a DNA test or certainty—they’re each proud to be one-third of a father to her. The gesture touches Sophie deeply, and for the first time, she feels whole.

Then, in a final twist, Sophie turns to Sky. Realizing that they don’t need a wedding to define their future, she suggests they postpone the ceremony and travel the world together instead. Sky agrees with a smile, their love stronger for having weathered the storm.

With the guests still gathered and love in the air, Sam seizes the moment. He turns to Donna and, with heartfelt sincerity, proposes to her. He’s divorced now, he explains, and he’s never stopped loving her. Donna, her heart full, says yes—and in a joyous, spontaneous celebration, they marry on the spot.

As night falls on Kalokairi, music and laughter echo across the island. The past has been confronted, the future embraced, and amidst the summer magic, new beginnings bloom.
