The youth of Eastern Visayas are hungry and eager for genuine, inclusive change, as evidenced by the record turnout of youth voters during the recent 10-day registration drive for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (BSKE) elections.
Notwithstanding the recent signing of the law postponing the BSKE to 2026, the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) registration drive showed a huge turnout of young aspiring voters, according to Comelec Eastern Visayas regional director Jose Nick Mendros.
Of the 143,318 voter applications processed in the region from August 1 to 10, some 110,878, or 77 percent, are first-time voters of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) within the age range of 15 to 17.
“Despite reports of election postponement, many of our young voters showed up to register. They are interested to be part of the process in choosing leaders,” Mendros said.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed on August 14 Republic Act No. 12232, which postpones the December 2025 BSKE and moves it to the first Monday of November 2026.
