Catbalogan City, Samar – Barangay Patong in Calbiga, Samar proudly embraces modern agricultural technology with the use of transplanting machines for rice planting. According to Barangay Chairman Rommel Rutor, this innovation significantly reduces costs and speeds up planting processes. However, it also presents challenges, as it impacts the livelihood of human rice planters during the planting season.
"In every effort to progress, there is always sacrifice. We just have to keep moving forward," said Chairman Rutor, expressing optimism that the new technology will ultimately lead to better outcomes for their community.
Retraining and Equipment Enhancements
According to information gathered by OpinYon, Barangay Patong previously acquired transplanting machines but faced difficulties in using them due to a lack of training and acceptance of the technology. To address this, the farmers underwent retraining sessions and were provided additional equipment, including planting containers and additional machinery.
These efforts have paid off, with farmers now showing a positive outlook and achieving more efficient rice planting using the transplanting machines.
Harvesters for Farmers
In addition to the transplanting machines, the Department of Agriculture awarded three units of harvesters to the Barangay Patong Farmers Association. These machines will help accelerate harvesting, further streamlining agricultural processes in the community.
This support from the government underscores the importance of agriculture in driving economic growth in Calbiga.
By adopting transplanting machines and other modern equipment, Barangay Patong is taking a significant step forward in enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability. Despite the challenges, the barangay remains optimistic that these innovations will pave the way for continued progress and prosperity.
