KALIBO, Aklan – In an exciting development for the tourism sector, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is set to build a state-of-the-art cruise ship port in Buruanga, Aklan. This new port, to be located in Barangay Alegria, promises to welcome more travelers aboard cruise ships, further solidifying the Philippines' reputation as a premier tourist destination.

With an approved budget of P749,578,209.32 for the year 2024, the project underscores the PPA’s commitment to enhancing the country's port infrastructure.

The contractor selected for this multi-million-peso project will have 900 days to complete the construction from the date they receive the notice to proceed.

The PPA will hold a pre-bid conference on May 13, 2024, at the PPA Function Hall in Manila. Interested bidders must submit their proposals by 9 a.m. on May 28, 2024.

To qualify, bidders need to have a Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB) Registration: Large B – Port, Harbor, and Offshore Engineering.

The winning bidder will be tasked with constructing a reinforced concrete platform and pier, a rock causeway, and other port facilities in Barangay Alegria.

Broader Initiatives

This modern cruise terminal is designed to meet the growing demand for cruise tourism, particularly from visitors to the nearby Boracay Island.

Expanding port facilities is part of a broader initiative by the PPA.

Similar upgrades are happening across the country, including in Palawan, Bohol, Ilocos Sur, Surigao del Norte, Manila, Camiguin, and Ilocos Norte.

These efforts aim to enhance the Philippines' standing as a top-notch tourist destination, recognized recently when the country was named the Best Cruise Destination in Asia in 2023 by the World Cruise Awards.

The new cruise port in Buruanga is a significant step towards boosting local tourism and economic development.

More Visitors

Buruanga Mayor Mark Fernandez remarked, “This project will bring immense benefits to our community by creating jobs and increasing our visibility as a tourist destination. We are excited for what the future holds.”

Likewise, PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago emphasized the importance of this project: “The new cruise port in Buruanga aligns with our goal of improving the country’s port infrastructure to support the growing tourism industry. This facility will not only accommodate larger cruise ships but also enhance the overall experience for tourists visiting Boracay and other nearby attractions.”

As the Philippines continues to attract more international visitors, projects like the Buruanga cruise port are vital in supporting and sustaining this growth.

The modern facilities will ensure that the country remains competitive in the global tourism market, providing a seamless and enjoyable experience for all who visit.
