With the donation of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) of traffic lights to the city government of Biñan, Laguna, officials hope to solve the perennial problem of heavy traffic jams in the city.
In an interview with OpinYon Laguna, Ron Roscain, officer-in-charge of the Biñan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), reported that the city government is now gearing up to install traffic lights in at least four strategic areas along the National Highway with the help of the MMDA.
“Mayroon po kasing mga traffic light na tatanggalin na sa Metro Manila, and Mayor Gel Alonte has requested additional traffic lights kay MMDA Chairman Don Artes,” Roscain said.
“Ngayon, na-grant na po ito ng MMDA sa amin; kaya lang, useless naman na ibigay lang yung physical traffic lights sa atin,” he added.
Pending further studies on the daily vehicular volume along the National Highway, Roscain said at least four areas along the main highway have been targeted as areas where traffic lights will be installed.
These include the area of the Canlalay Rotonda and Petron going to downtown Biñan City; the intersection of National Highway and the San Francisco/Halang Road; and the intersection of National Highway and Governor’s Drive near what used to be the Olivarez Commercial Plaza.
These areas have long been a source of complaints by motorists and commuters due to traffic jams, especially during rush hour.
“Not only that, sira po yung traffic light sa intersection ng Olivarez, so kailangan na po talaga nating lagyan ito ng traffic light,” Roscain explained.
Not only will the MMDA provide the traffic lights, but they will also assist in the logistical aspects of the operation of these lights to ensure a smoother flow of traffic along the National Highway, he added.
“Mayroon pong mga MMDA personnel na tumutulong sa atin para mangalap ng data kung gaano karami yung volume ng traffic tuwing on and off peak hours,” he said.
