Miss Universe Philippines 2024, Chelsea Manalo, is advocating for the families and children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as part of Miss Universe’s Voice for Change initiative.

The Voice for Change competition calls on every Miss Universe delegate to select a cause, both as a public message and a meaningful contribution beyond the pageant.

Securing a finalist spot or winning in this category can enhance a delegate’s chance of advancing in the Miss Universe finals.

In 2023, Michelle Dee, the Philippines’ Miss Universe representative, championed autism awareness and placed as one of three Gold Winners, landing her in the Top 10 alongside three special awards.

This year, Chelsea Manalo has chosen to spotlight OFW families, calling OFWs the Philippines’ "modern heroes."
In a video explaining her advocacy, Chelsea cited 2023 statistics from the Philippine Statistics Authority: over 2.16 million Filipino migrant workers, a figure that has surged as of 2024.

"Behind their remittances and balikbayan boxes are stories of sacrifice," Chelsea shared, underscoring the resilience of OFW families who persevere across vast distances, time zones, and challenging circumstances.

Chelsea’s personal connection to this cause is evident; her own father served as a seaman for ten years.

Chelsea’s advocacy aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-being (Goal 3), Quality Education (Goal 4), and Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10).

Chelsea explained that children of OFWs may experience unique family dynamics, and attempts to maintain bonds with parents abroad can still leave some feeling neglected or isolated, impacting their education, mental health, and social relationships.

"I have made it my mission to show these children that, despite their challenges, their family situation should never limit their potential," she continued.

Chelsea highlighted programs from the Department of Migrant Workers and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to support her mission.

“When we support one another, we help the youth feel valued and understood, turning their situations into shared experiences,” she concluded.

“Instead of isolating challenges, we have the power to help, mold, and uplift the next generation.”

Despite currently ranking 14th at the Voice for Change voting, Chelsea’s supporters still have time to elevate her ranking before the voting period closes this week, as shared on Miss Universe Philippines’ Facebook page.

This November 16 (November 17 in the Philippines), over 125 contestants will compete to succeed reigning Miss Universe Sheynnis Palacios.

Should she win, Chelsea will become the fifth Filipina to hold the Miss Universe title, following in the footsteps of Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Pia Wurtzbach, and Catriona Gray.
