Can’t get enough of Pinoy animation? Here’s some outstanding works by a Filipino animator who created badass creatures out of our everyday kakanin favorites.
JOHN Patrick Gañas created six badass characters whose facets are inspired by our favorite glutinous rice cakes – the Kakanin Squad.
Lapong is the puto cheese fighter and the champion of the Dinuguan War.
He wears a bahag and a cape made of a banana leaf, and he protects himself with a bilao shield.
Buri is the master of the art of suman Buri wrapping.
Tapay is a bibingka ranger who was trained under pressure inside a palayok.
Kayo is a kutsinta rogue with a coconut meat cloak.
Latag is a sapin-sapin cleric who has a latik necklace and mace.
Palay is a rice spirit that watches over the plains of Luzon.
These characters make up the Kakanin Squad, and they are well-loved by many Filipinos who stumbled upon Gañas’ illustrations.
He was also able to garner approval from “Trese” creator Budjette Tan.
Gañas really loves working on food-inspired art as he cartoonizes them. He is a digital painter, illustrator, and character designer.
His other works include "We Bare Bears”-inspired ice cream art, “Spirited Away”-inspired sushi, “Adventure Time”-inspired corn dog, and slime mobs of the Filipino terms for rice (i.e. mumo, palay, tutong, bigas, bahaw). (EFO)
