Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas has thrown his support behind the House of Representatives’ call for Charter change (Cha-cha), asserting that it is high time to revisit and possibly amend the Philippine Constitution, which was ratified in 1987.
Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Treñas emphasized the need for adjustments, particularly in the economic provisions of the Constitution, to make the country more appealing to foreign investors. "After 37 years, it is necessary for us to review and possibly revise some provisions. The economic provisions are too stringent. For me, that's one of the things that should be revisited," Mayor Treñas stated.
The mayor's stance is grounded in the belief that a more flexible approach to economic provisions could attract increased foreign investment, fostering economic growth and job creation. Treñas wants changes that align with contemporary needs and opportunities.
He further expressed his support for extending the terms of elected government officials, highlighting the practical challenges newly elected officials face. "I am in favor. Why? You are still learning the ropes in your first year as a new mayor. You start implementing your plans in the second year, and by the third year, you're already campaigning again," Mayor Treñas explained.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of extending terms, the mayor also stressed the importance of maintaining a balance. "Four years is really good enough," he added, indicating a thoughtful approach to the proposed changes.
Treñas' endorsement of Charter change and his emphasis on economic provisions and term extensions reflect a forward-thinking approach to governance. In a rapidly changing global landscape, his stance positions Iloilo City to adapt and thrive, demonstrating a commitment to creating an environment conducive to investment, development, and overall progress.
As discussions on Charter change unfold, Mayor Treñas' support adds a significant voice to the conversation, advocating for adjustments that resonate with the needs and aspirations of the Iloilo community. In pursuing a more vibrant and economically resilient future, Mayor Jerry Treñas stands as a beacon of progressive leadership.
