The Phoenix Fuel Masters releases Matthew Wright after six years of being the face of the franchise and leading them to multiple playoff stints which includes two semifinal appearances.

Matthew Wright officially left the Phoenix Fuel Masters after six years of playing for the team as he decided not to renew his contract with the franchise.

The two-time Mythical Second Team member and a two-time All-Star Game MVP took to Instagram to thank everyone in the squad that helped him throughout his tenure.

“It has been an unforgettable 6 years with the @fuelmasters. Thank you to all my coaches, teammates, ball boys and bosses for being a part of this chapter in my life. Most importantly thank you to all the fans who have supported me through thick and thin. I love you all,” he wrote as he posted a picture of him in a Phoenix jersey.

The Fuel Masters management also wrote a statement on Wednesday saying that they respect the decision of Wright not to renew his contract and made it clear that they won’t stand in the way of his decision to seek a better future for himself and his family.

“The Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters wish Matthew Wright all the best in his future endeavors. The team is saddened to see its longest tenured player go but at the same time grateful for all the blood, sweat, and tears he put into this franchise. We know that he will keep the Phoenix flame burning within him wherever he may go,” the Fuel Masters said in the statement.

The 31-year-old had been vocal about his options while the Phoenix management also put all their best effort to reach an agreement to keep Wright in their roster as rumors of the guard playing in the B.League have been present.

“As applicable to any player of the team, we shall abide with the existing policies of the PBA with regard to players opting to play abroad,” they added in the statement.
