For today's generation, marriage is more than simply a sharing of love. The qualities for companionship now revolve around mutual consent, financial stability, effective communication, freedom, and equality.

The world today should see beyond marriage; that women are far different from what the old world has allotted them. More than just a spouse, she is a trendsetter, a leader, an achiever; she is the future.

ONE of the benefits of contemporary female empowerment is that a woman can now say no to marriage despite what society expects her to do.

For the modern woman, there is more to life than saying,

“I do.”

Traditionally, marriage is considered as the pinnacle of love. But beyond the jitters of walking down the aisle with her white dress; beyond the sweetest song playing in the background, the modern times begs the question: should it be the crowning glory of her life?

In several, if not all, male-dominated cultures around the world, marriage is mainly in favor of the man as what is exhibited by many countries in Africa and Asia, which similarly consider women as second-class citizens.

Alarmingly, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), it is estimated that about 12 million underage girls are annually wedded to men, most likely without their consent.

Marriage and Christianity

In the Philippines, our present concept of marriage was handed over to us by the Roman Catholic Church and their teachings that this matrimony is a gift of God and a sacred act for all believers.

In fact, marriage is among the seven holy sacraments of the Church that every devotee must receive. And for millions of Catholics in the country, marriage is a tradition and a duty so easily available and necessary.

However, women no longer want to remain in the house doing things she is expected to do.

She wants to unravel the mysteries in this world too. She wants to become the best version of herself and make a difference--reach the stars.

Marriage and women

Marriage today is more than just the qualification of love. For many, especially among the younger generations, the qualities for companionship revolves around mutual consent, financial stability, effective communication, freedom, and equality.

But for others, staying single is an inalienable right and choice—and that is perfectly fine.

Among the reasons why women choose to say single includes her dedication to her career, her preference not to have children, her regard for her independence, or simply because one can be in a healthy and long-lasting relationship even without the construct of marriage.

According to Behavioral Scientists and London School of Economics Professor Paul Dolan, women are more successful and happier if they are single and childless.

“We do have some good longitudinal data following the same people over time, but I am going to do a massive disservice to that science and just say: if you’re a man, you should probably get married; if you’re a woman, don’t bother,” Dolan said.

The world today should see beyond marriage; that women are far different from what the old world has allotted them.

More than just a spouse, she is a trendsetter, a leader, an achiever; she is the future. (JT)
