President and Agriculture Secretary Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants to accelerate the efforts to rebuild the agriculture sector and make the country the leading agricultural resource hub in the globe.
President Marcos Jr., concurrent Agriculture Secretary, emphasized the need to accelerate efforts to restore the country's agriculture sector and the situation of Filipino farmers and fishermen.
During the opening of Agrilink, Foodlink, Aqualink 2022, Marcos spoke of his administration working with the agriculture sector to achieve its goals, highlighting government programs designed to assist farmers and fishers, such as fuel discounts, irrigation projects, food logistic hubs, and agri-trading centers.
The Agrilink, Foodlink, Aqualink 2022 event was held at the World Trade Center and is the country’s premier international trade exhibition in agriculture, food, and aquaculture, Inquirer reported.
“We will build ourselves back better together with the people who have been our bedrock of strength and of sustenance, even at the most challenging times,” Marcos said.
Farmers and fishermen play a crucial role in modernizing and industrializing the agricultural sector to ensure the country's food supply. Because of them, we have food on our tables and the sustenance we need to pursue endeavors for the betterment of the nation.
Marcos acknowledged the farmers, fishermen, livestock farmers, and breeders, referring to them as the "great unsung heroes of our nation."
However, he added that the work to improve the agriculture sector and improve the plight of both farmers and fisherfolks has only just begun.
“We need to continue to open more opportunities to improve their wellbeing,” Marcos said stressing the need to improve their situation.
Currently, the Philippines is "playing catch-up" in rebuilding the agriculture sector, which Marcos says has lost relevance.
However, he also expressed confidence that the Philippines will be a leading agricultural resource hub in the world.
“With our energies and resources combined, I am confident that we will not only achieve our goal of feeding the Filipino people but also achieve our dream of making the Philippines a leading agricultural resource hub in the region and the world,” Marcos concluded.
