BRANDING them as fraudsters, an elderly member of the Marcos clan has chided Sen. Imee Marcos and her brother presidential aspirant Bongbong, for using unity and healing as the central campaign theme of the latter.

Incumbent Laoag City Mayor Michael Marcos Keon, lamented in his supposed Twitter post that

“it’s ironic that his cousins Bongbong and Imee are very fond of using the word "unity", when they themselves cannot unite their family”.

He then slammed them for allegedly using the word unity when it only favorably applies to them.

“Unity only applies to them when you bow down to their wishes and caprices,” Keon said.

“I cannot by principle endorse Bongbong as president nor his son Sandro as congressman for the 1st District of Ilocos Norte. They are both fraudsters, who do not possess intellectual nor leadership skills,” he added.

“They do not know hard work that's why they never achieved anything in their lives,” the mayor stressed.

Keon was a favorite nephew of former strongman President Ferdinand Marcos and has in fact given him various government posts during the martial law years.

Keon is the son of Australian journalist Michael James Keon and the elder Marcos’ sister Elizabeth, who served as governor of Ilocos Norte from 1971 to 1983.

His father worked for the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and had a hand in setting up the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Laguna.

Before entering politics, Keon worked in the sports sector as director of the Gintong Alay program.

This project was launched on October 31, 1979 and was intended to ensure the success of Philippine sports to promote and ultimately to achieve gold medals in international games especially in the Worlds and Olympics events.

He served as provincial governor of Ilocos Norte from 2007-2010. He was preceded by cousin, Bongbong Marcos and was succeeded by Imee Marcos.

He initially planned to run as mayor of Laoag for 2013 elections but withdrew after Bongbong Marcos convinced him to withdraw his candidacy in favor of Chevylle Fariñas.

In 2019 elections, he again ran for the same position; this time with the support of the Marcos clan.

He defeated then incumbent Mayor Chevylle Fariñas. His victory signaled the end of decades-old rule of the Fariñas clan in the city.
