Exactly 25 days after being proclaimed, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers his state of the nation address (SONA) as the 17th Chief Executive at 4 p.m. today at the Batasang Pambansa.
Marcos drafted his own address , which was completed over the weekend and early on this Monday, said Executive Secretary Victor Rodriguez.
The president wanted his first SONA to be simple, said Mark Leandro Mendoza, the House Secretary General.
Vice President Sara Duterte, former presidents, vice presidents, Speakers, Senate presidents, members of the diplomatic corps, judges, and members of the Marcos government form part of the 1,300 individuals invited to the SONA
EXPECTATIONS
Much is expected from the SONA from the people, parliamentarians, and progressive organizations, especially at a time when gasoline and commodity costs are rising and COVID-19 are plaguing the country.
Rodriguez intimated earlier that Marcos' SONA would include the administration's plans for economic recovery, the restart of in-person instruction, and the COVID-19 reaction and digitalization of government.
Senator Loren Legarda said she anticipates hearing specific proposals to shift to a better normal "aligned and attuned to the climate path."
She also wants to know how Marcos intends to improve the nation's educational system and what he would do about the growing national debt, which stands at P12.495 trillion.
Senator Ronald dela Rosa said he wanted to know if the next administration will carry on the accomplishments of former President Duterte. Senator Sonny Angara wants to hear Marcos' plans for the nation's economy in the face of the pandemic.
Senator Christopher Go said he expects the next administration to strengthen the nation's healthcare system, food supply, and disaster response measures, among other things, in addition to pandemic response and recovery strategies.
Go also hopes that the Marcos administration will continue Duterte's BuildBuildBuild program and step up its fight against crime, corruption, and illegal drugs.
Senator JV Ejercito said Marcos should concentrate on outlining his plans for infrastructure development, food security, the execution of the Universal Health Care law, and economic recovery in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For her part, Senator Nancy Binay urges Marcos to deal with the issues of how the nation would recover from the pandemic's negative consequences as well as the skyrocketing prices of petroleum items.
Senator Robin Padilla stated that he is interested in hearing the President's ideas for the infrastructure, energy, and agriculture industries.
Militant groups
While emphasizing that many women lack a source of income, Gabriela, represented by Jom Salvador, argued that the next administration must offer chances for women.
Kilusang Mayo Uno advocated for the passage of legislation institutionalizing a national minimum wage and abolishing the practice of contractualization in the workplace, while Unyon ng mga Manggagawa sa Agrikultura demanded significant measures in the agricultural sector.
The government needs to address the high cost of fuel and review the program for modernizing public utility vehicles, according to the transportation group Piston, while the Health Alliance for Democracy pushed for an increase in pay for healthcare workers who were on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eufemia Domingo of Kadamay also pleaded with the Marcos administration to offer more housing projects to clear the backlog, which she claimed had grown to 6.7 million, under President Rodrigo Duterte's administration.
Regarding education, Raymond Basilio of ACT encouraged the new administration to boost the budget for the field and protect the security of the children and staff as the face-to-face school year got underway.
Jigs Clamor of Karapatan also declared that advocacy organizations would keep fighting for the victims of human rights crimes to receive justice. The red-tagging of campaigners was also condemned by him.
