Catbalogan City, Samar --- A concerned resident of Manicani Island, Fidelino M. Atregenio, has written an open letter to Guiuan Mayor Annaliza Gonzales Kwan, calling for the immediate cessation of mining activities on the island.

The letter, addressed to the Office of the Mayor, highlights the ongoing mining operations despite Mayor Kwan's previous campaign promise to halt them.

Atregenio's position, which he said is supported by many other residents, emphasizes that Manicani Island is a protected area under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) and that the mining operations threaten its biodiversity and sustainability.

He reminded Mayor Kwan of her commitment during her first campaign to protect the island's ecological balance.

"The people of Guiuan, particularly those in the communities most affected by the mining activities, are counting on you to uphold your pledge and to protect the environment and the livelihoods of the people who rely on the island's resources," Atregenio stated in his letter. With Mayor Kwan seeking re-election for her sixth term, Atregenio urged her to "take immediate action and fulfill your previous commitment.

" He requested that the mayor use her authority to stop the mining company's operations and take legal and administrative steps to prevent future activities.

The letter underscores the residents' hope that Mayor Kwan will honor her promise and protect Manicani Island for future generations.

As of this writing, there has been no official response from Mayor Kwan's office.
