A 35-year-old man was arrested on Friday morning after allegedly assaulting his 58-year-old mother with a bolo knife in this municipality.
According to the investigation by the Laoang Municipal Police Station, the victim told officers that her son had been restless and had not slept the night before the incident.
When she asked him what was wrong, he reportedly grabbed a large-bladed weapon locally known as a “sundang” and struck her on the left ear.
Despite the initial wound, the mother managed to evade a follow-up attack and called for help.
Neighbours and barangay officials responded quickly, joining in the effort to resist the suspect until police arrived. With their assistance, the suspect was subdued and restrained, preventing further harm to the victim.
Responding officers from the station, led by Nimrod Holares, arrived at the scene, arrested the man, and recovered the weapon used in the assault.
The victim was immediately transported to the Catubig Hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect is now in police custody and faces charges of frustrated parricide under the Revised Penal Code.
During initial questioning, the suspect claimed that his mother had “poisoned” him, a claim which police are investigating.
Local authorities have called the incident a serious domestic violence case and are reminding the public about the importance of mental-health awareness and early intervention in family disputes.
No official statement from the provincial police headquarters or social welfare office has yet been released.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and further updates on the victim’s condition or any underlying issues (such as substance use or mental-health concerns) will be provided when available.
