“Samar’s 'Lukso-rious' road is not the province’s fault!”
Years of mockery and complaints, Samar’s Second District Representative Reynolds Michael Tan broke his silence and addressed the long-standing issue of the province’s road condition.
The statement was released after the official’s post asking the public for another money hunt was bombarded with comments asking for better road conditions instead.
“We have the worst portion of the Maharlika Highway. Why don't you prioritize it? Asay man hiton nga money hunting,” Chris Bujosh commented.
“The Maharlika Highway is the responsibility of the National Government asya nga guti la aton power hito nga aspect. Pero, aton ig papa abot aton concern ha national asya nga natatagan gihapon kita hin pondo pero dire gudla tig daragko,” Tan posted.
Comparison
Furthermore, Tan pointed out the incessant comparison in the road conditions of Western from Eastern Samar which he claims to be invalid.
“Kun iyo naman liwat ig compare it kalsada hit Eastern Samar ngan Samar (Western), SAYOP ito nga comparison kay it Eastern Samar Highway dire part han Maharlika asya nga dire damo it naagi so mag-iiha liwat ito maruba it kalsada.”
“Please lang bago kita magpinan comment para hit shares ngan clout pag research anay kita,” the solon added.
Repairs Ongoing
Last March, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced the P8.05-billion allocation for this year for the rehabilitation of the damaged sections of Maharlika Highway covering areas of Samar province.
As of this writing, the Catbalogan to Calbiga portion is already in better condition compared to the previous years.
“Ha Pinabacdao ngan Santa Rita gin aayos na gihapon pero dire la tigda kay guti pala an pondo para ha 2024 pero ha 2025 mas matatagan naman focus ito nga area,” Tan said.
Accessibility
While the official’s statement brought some clarity, others remain unsatisfied.
Many netizens pointed out the lack of maintenance in the first place knowing that the Samar area of the Maharlika Highway is the only accessible road going in and out of Leyte.
This means that the government and DPWH should have anticipated the wear and tear of the road that is being used by both small vehicles and heavy trucks.
