As Lucena City progresses, so does the increase in social challenges—including the presence of street children and homeless individuals. In the face of this problem, the "Bantay Gala" program stands as a symbol of hope and compassion in the community.
Led by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) in cooperation with various agencies and barangays, Bantay Gala is not just a simple operation; it is a comprehensive response to issues of mendicancy, illegal substance use, and the proliferation of youth on the streets.
It implements Presidential Decree No. 1563 or the Anti-Mendicancy Law and laws against solvent abuse, not only to ensure order but also to provide opportunities for those in need to rise again.
Currently, 133 individuals rescued from the streets are under the custody of the local government of Lucena City, proving that the city is serious about implementing the program.
Through counseling by social workers, those rescued—especially children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities (PWDs)—are provided with appropriate intervention and services.
This process shows that the local government does not merely punish, but cares and helps change lives.
The collaboration of the PNP, BFP, CHO, WCPD, and the Barangay Council is crucial to the success of Bantay Gala.
But above all, the participation of every Lucenahin is a must. Instead of giving alms on the streets, extend help to the proper agencies to ensure that those in need receive proper care and opportunities.
The Bantay Gala is a firm step towards a safe, orderly, and humane Lucena. Under the leadership of CSWDO-OIC Dr. Jocelyn Chua, may it serve as an inspiration to other local governments.
