NUMANCIA, Aklan — A massive fire engulfed several establishments on the morning of May 29, resulting in an estimated P43 million in property damage. The blaze, which started around 9:10 a.m. in a commercial area along Aklan West Road in Punta Tulay, quickly spread, prompting the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Numancia to raise the alert to a third alarm.

Firefighters from nearby municipalities, including Kalibo, Nabas, Malinao, and others, rushed to the scene, working tirelessly alongside emergency responders and volunteers. The combined efforts were crucial in containing the fire, which was declared extinguished at 11:42 a.m. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries reported.

Fire Officer 2 Adrianne Villas of BFP-Numancia stated that the investigation into the fire's origin and cause is ongoing.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the fire started at the rear sections of the affected establishments, which included Dela Vega Japan Surplus, Barbaza Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Joem Glass and Aluminum Works, and MMS Cycle Trading.

The swift response was critical in preventing even greater destruction, aided by the presence of firewalls in some buildings.

During the emergency, motorists were advised to avoid the Kalibo bridges and take alternate routes to facilitate the movement of fire trucks and emergency response teams. This incident highlights the need for robust fire safety measures and the importance of community cooperation during emergencies.

The significant property loss underscores the necessity for improved fire prevention and preparedness. Establishments must ensure compliance with fire safety regulations, including regular inspections, functional firewalls, and accessible emergency exits.

The community's quick response was commendable, but prevention is always better than cure.

This fire in Numancia serves as a sobering reminder of the ever-present risks and the need for vigilance in fire safety. As the investigation continues, both businesses and residents must take proactive steps to prevent such disasters in the future.
