ANGONO, Rizal – Starting February 25, the lakeshore municipality regarded as the Arts Capital of the Philippines hinted at celebrating the National Arts Month embarking on activities combining romance and multi-facet artistry.

According to Angono Mayor Jeri Mae Calderon, the local government has prepared a series of events for the public from February to March, which started last week with the commemoration of the 111th birth anniversary of National Artist for Music Maestro Lucio San Pedro at the artist’s tomb at Saint Clement Cemetery.

Local folks, including young artists who are into music, highlighted the national artist’s contribution to music that has been known for generations.

San Pedro’s long list of compositions includes the "Himno del Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno", a popular church song at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila.

Art exhibits, musical performances, and lectures on arts in various art galleries and museums are among the events happening in the town not only throughout the whole month of February but also until the last week of March.

Exhibitions and lectures on arts by local artists are lined up at Nono Museum of Arts and History, Angkla Art Gallery; The Blanco Art Gallery; Nemiranda Art House; Angono Art Center; Kuta Art Space; Blanco Family Museum, all in Angono, Rizal.

Local visual artists will also showcase their works outside the town as their masterpieces are also featured in venues such as Nemi Miranda’s solo exhibit and book launching at the Ayala One Mall in Ayala, Makati on Feb. 21 and the “Latag Art Exhibit” of Angono artists at Nineveh Art Gallery at Sta. Cruz, Laguna from Feb. 25 to March 25.

On Valentine’s Day, the local government also held a free concert and poetry recitation – dubbed Acoustic Night and Spoken Poetry – at the Plaza Rizal inside the municipal quadrangle.

According to Vice Mayor Gerardo Calderon, another musical concert will also be presented by the local government on February 25, 7:00 P.M. at the Angono Gymnasium as a tribute to the Rizaleños band composers and arrangers.
