A local vlogger tragically died after participating in a risky mukbang challenge where he ate an entire roast chicken — bones and all — in exchange for a promised ₱20,000 reward.
The vlogger, identified only as a certain Rogelio from Kananga, Leyte, was known for accepting daring food challenges suggested by his followers.
In this latest stunt, he took on a challenge from one of his online fans, who promised ₱20,000 if he could finish a whole “litson manok” including the bones.
Two days after the challenge, Rogelio reportedly began experiencing severe stomach pain. Doctors later found that undigested chicken bones had obstructed his intestines.
He was hospitalized for over a week, but complications worsened due to internal injuries caused by the sharp bones.
Despite doctors recommending surgery to remove the bone fragments, Rogelio's mother declined the procedure out of fear for her son's safety.
He was discharged from the hospital but continued to suffer at home. He died days later, never having received the promised reward.
Local authorities are now warning the public about the dangers of extreme online challenges, especially those that involve the intake of food or drinks.
“This is a tragic reminder that our health and safety should never be risked for money or fame,” posted a netizen on his social media page.
The vlogger's death has sparked conversations online about the ethical responsibility of content creators and followers alike.
Many netizens have expressed outrage that the person who issued the challenge has not come forward or taken accountability.
As of now, no charges have been filed, but officials are investigating the incident.
