The Province of Leyte took a major step forward in its tourism and development efforts today with the official launch of the AirAsia Tacloban-Leyte Route Story Conference and Media Tour.
The high-energy press conference featured key officials, including Leyte Governor Jericho “Icot” Petilla, who expressed enthusiasm about the province’s potential.
“More than just travel—it’s about telling our stories, creating local jobs, and building a better future for Leyteños through tourism,” Gov. Petilla stated, emphasizing the broader vision behind the initiative.
“From Leyte to Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—let’s make #SeeYouLeyte echo nationwide.”
The collaboration between AirAsia Philippines and Leyte signifies a renewed commitment to spotlight regional destinations. This partnership aims to boost visibility through purposeful storytelling, strategic alliances, and immersive experiences, ultimately drawing more visitors to Leyte’s rich cultural and natural attractions.
The day concluded with a tour of Leyte’s historical landmarks, including the iconic MacArthur Leyte Landing Monument and the San Juanico Bridge, offering delegates a glimpse into the province’s deep history and scenic beauty.
Leyte’s officials, led by Board Member Chinggay, expressed gratitude for AirAsia’s role in elevating Leyte as a prime tourist hub.
“We are thankful to AirAsia for inviting top media delegates to showcase Leyte as a hidden gem,” Chinggay shared.
“Media will visit Kalanggaman Island, known for its breathtaking sandbar and coral reefs, and explore Baybay City, home to Visayas State University and vibrant agricultural innovations.”
She also highlighted visits to key sites like the historic MacArthur Landing and the scenic Farm at Guinciaman, emphasizing the importance of sustainable tourism.
Chinggay added, “Activities like farm-to-forest ATV rides and tasting Leyte’s authentic delicacies promote our cultural heritage and support local economies. When tourism is done responsibly, everyone wins.”
Airline redemption?
However, amid the positive developments, concerns about airline ticket pricing and booking platforms have resurfaced.
In the past months, reports indicate that AirAsia’s Malaysia-based platform, AirAsia Move, issued a one-way ticket from Tacloban to Manila at an exorbitant price of 40,000 pesos. Foremost of the complainants was Rep. Richard Gomez of the 3rd district of Leyte.
A recent complaint to the Department of Transportation revealed difficulties in rebooking and cancellation, with consumers frustrated over poor customer service and lack of direct contact options.
“This platform is a huge scam,” one traveler lamented. “They claim it’s independent from AirAsia, but the website redirects you to their ticketing system. I had to dispute a 7K flight charge because I couldn’t get help when I needed it. Do not use AirAsia Move for booking your flights.”
Industry observers urge caution until airlines address these concerns and ensure transparent, affordable pricing for passengers.
Despite these setbacks, the launch of the Tacloban-Leyte route marks a promising chapter for Leyte’s tourism prospects, with hopes that increased connectivity will bring lasting economic and cultural benefits to the region.
As Leyte opens its doors wider to the world, the message remains clear: with responsible tourism and continued partnerships, Leyte is set to become an exciting, accessible destination for travelers across the Philippines and beyond.
