A disqualifying foul and two technical fouls resulted to Brent Paraiso and Louie Sangalang sitting out their game against San Beda this Friday.

Brent Paraiso and Louie Sangalang of the Letran Knights were given one-game suspensions following the school’s win against the Mapua Cardinals 67-62 in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Both Paraiso and Sangalang were thrown out of the game on Wednesday and will be serving their penalty in today's game against archrivals San Beda University.

Paraiso was ejected with 5:28 minutes left in the game delivering a disqualifying foul by throwing an elbow against the Cardinal’s Rence Nocum and was deemed "an act of violence."

Sangalang was called for two technical fouls in the game, with the second one called as taunting with just 13.8 seconds to go.

According to NCAA S98 basketball commissioner Tonichi Pujante on Wednesday awarding the players with the suspension was in line with FIBA and NCAA Ground Rules.

“I hope I’ve enlightened everyone and to those directly concerned, please be proficient on the rules first before uttering baseless accusations on the Game Officials and the Commissioner’s Office,” said Pujante in the statement.
“I strongly denounce violence of any form in and outside the playing court. Rest assured I’ve addressed this with utmost objectivity and compassion.”

Pujante added that Paraiso's infraction was reviewable based on Article 42 of the FIBA Rules.

Upon thorough review, it was

"established that Paraiso intentionally hit [Nocum] at the back of his head with an elbow, which is a deliberate act of violence and not a legitimate basketball play."

And as for Sangalang’s case as per NCAA Ground Rules Art. 7.2, “a player who is thrown out of the game by the referee for unsportsmanlike conduct in any game will be suspended for one game implemented immediately on the next scheduled team game.”
