'The number of leptospirosis cases this year so far is 80 percent higher compared to the same period last year. The need for immediate action cannot be overstated. Local authorities and health professionals must come together to combat the spread of these diseases.'

Capiz Provincial Health Office (PHO) has sounded the alarm on the rising cases of leptospirosis and dengue, and it's a cause for serious concern. These two diseases are silently infiltrating the communities, posing a threat to the health and well-being of the residents.

Joeffry Espiritu, Department of Health (DOH) Management Officer IV and spokesperson said that based on PHO data, the province has 38 cases of leptospirosis with five deaths while dengue cases totaled 500 with three deaths.

Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection, and dengue, a viral disease, are no strangers to the tropical climates of the Philippines, but the alarming surge in cases cannot be ignored. Leptospirosis is primarily spread through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, while the notorious Aedes mosquitoes transmit dengue.

Both can lead to severe health complications and in the worst cases, they can be fatal if not managed effectively.

80% More Cases

Leptospirosis cases PHO recorder are in the towns of Dao (2), Dumalag (3), Dumarao (1), Ivisan (2), Jamindan (1), Maayon (2), Panay (4), Panitan (1), Pilar (2), Pontevedra (5), President Roxas (2), Sapian (3), Sigma (1), and Roxas City (9).

Data revealed that leptospirosis deaths were recorded in Pontevedra (1), President Roxas (1), Dumalag (1), and Panay (2).

The number of leptospirosis cases this year so far is 80 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

The need for immediate action cannot be overstated.

Local authorities and health professionals must come together to combat the spread of these diseases. The government must initiate public health campaigns that educate the community on the required preventive measures.

These campaigns should emphasize the importance of eliminating breeding sites for mosquitoes, maintaining proper sanitation, and avoiding contact with contaminated water sources.

Winning the Battle

However, it's not a battle that can be won solely by government initiatives and healthcare professionals. Community involvement is an essential piece of the puzzle.

Residents should be encouraged to take an active role in preventing the spread of these diseases. This means following recommended precautions diligently, such as keeping homes and surroundings free of potential breeding sites for mosquitoes, practicing proper hygiene, and reporting any symptoms promptly.

The rising cases of leptospirosis and dengue in Capiz should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders involved. The situation demands a collective effort from local authorities, healthcare professionals, and the community.

Only through swift and coordinated action can we mitigate the impact of these diseases and safeguard the health and well-being of our population. The time to act is now, and the responsibility is shared by all.
