Ilonggos are urged to take precautions against leptospirosis, especially during the rainy season, to prevent this potentially deadly disease, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) announced.

From January 1 to June 29, the province reported 56 cases of leptospirosis, marking a 57 percent decrease from the same period last year, which saw 131 cases.

Despite this decline, Dr. Rodney Labis, Chief of the IPHO Health Service Delivery Division, emphasized the need for continued vigilance. He called on rural health unit (RHU) coordinators to closely monitor the situation to prevent a potential outbreak, especially with the looming La Niña phenomenon.

"Based on our data, the leptospirosis cases are related to farming. There’s a risk for leptospirosis even without flooding," Dr. Labis stated.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease transmitted through contact with contaminated water and soil. Common symptoms include fever, headache, body and muscle aches, red eyes, and stomach pain. In severe cases, it can cause organ damage.
