Comebacking Senator Loren Legarda’s endorsement by the League of Provinces of the Philippines came after a survey was conducted among the League’s 81 governors on who to support for senator.
Three-term senator and now senatorialcandidate Loren Legarda welcomed the League of Provinces of the Philippines’s (LPP) endorsement of her candidacy.
Legarda, who currently serves as the representative of the Lone District of Antique in the House of Representatives, said she is “honored and sincerely grateful” to receive the trust and support of her fellow local government officials, especially the governors who “are closer to the people and are more aware of what the people in the grassroots need.”
“I’m honored and sincerely grateful for the League’s endorsement. My inclusion in LPP’s list is a recognition of many years of hard work and dedication to help uplift the lives of our countrymen. Once re-elected to the Senate, I will help push the projects and advocacies of our esteemed governors,” Legarda said in a statement issued April 13.
Legarda’s endorsement came after a survey was conducted among the League’s 81 governors on who to support for senator.
Besides Legarda, LPP president and Marinduque Governor Presbitero Velasco, Jr. said the survey also led to the endorsement of the candidacies of Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Senator Joel Villanueva, Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, and former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar.
“We need more allies in the 19th Congress to help the League push for vital policies that would advance our legislative agenda and protect the gains we have achieved in promoting a genuine fiscal and local autonomy of all local government units, particularly to help secure our rightful share in the national taxes,” Velasco said in a letter to LPP members.
As the former chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Legarda pushed for the allocation of budget for programs that facilitated employment and provided more accessible livelihood opportunities for all Filipinos, including the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) and Pangkabuhayan; the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (DSWD SLP); Department of Trade and Industry Shared Service Facilities (DTI SSF); Department of Science and Technology Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (DOST CEST); and TESDA training and scholarships.
She also helped fund DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program and the Department of Health’s (DOH) Medical Assistance to Indigent Patients (MAIP) program.
“I look forward to working with all our governors as we continue to push for more social service assistance through programs such as DOLE TUPAD and DSWD AICS. Together, let us ensure that national government programs, especially those on livelihood, employment, health, and education, are brought closer to the Filipino people as we strive for and ensure a sustainable and equitable growth and recovery for our country,” Legarda said.
