Lake Shore Colleges (formerly Lake Shore Educational Institution) in Biñan City, Laguna is ready for the challenges of the new curriculum for senior high schools in the Philippines.
In a recent press release, LSC announced that it was chosen by the Department of Education (DepEd) as one of the 841 pilot schools in the Philippines in which the department’s revised senior high school curriculum will undergo a pilot run.
LSC is the only private educational institution in Biñan City to be chosen for the pilot run of the revised curriculum.
“This is proof of the high trust DepEd has placed in the quality of education offered by LSC, as well as the school’s reputation as an institution that is open to new ideas, ready to adapt to change, and is truly committed to the success of its students,” the school added.
On April 10, officials from the DepEd Schools Division of Biñan City, led by Dr. Bayani Enriquez, Chief-SGOD, conducted an ocular inspection of LSC's classrooms and facilities to ensure that the school is ready for the implementation of the new SHS curriculum.
LSC’s teachers are now also undergoing trainings and seminars to enable them to adapt to the new curriculum, as well as to effectively transition the students to the expected changes.
New curriculum
According to DepEd officials, the revised senior high school curriculum focuses on flexibility and practicality, following feedback from various stakeholders on the nearly a decade of implementing senior high school in the Philippines' educational system.
Under the new curriculum, students will no longer be locked into the strand or track they choose.
Instead, under the "doorway option," they can choose electives from different subject clusters based on their interests and career plans.
Aside from reducing the current four academic strands to just two - Academic and Technical Professional - core subjects will also be reduced from the current 15 to just five.
Under the Academic track, students can choose subjects from five clusters: Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities; Business and Entrepreneurship; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Sports, Health and Wellness; and Field Experience.
The TechPro track, on the other hand, offers six clusters: Agriculture and Fishery Arts; Information and Communication Technology; Family and Consumer Science; Industrial Arts; Maritime; and Work Immersion.
“With these changes to the SHS curriculum, students are expected to become more ready for the challenges of the modern world – not only for their career but also for their chosen goals in life,” LSC stressed.
The pilot testing for the new SHS curriculum is expected to start during the academic year 2025-2026.
