Knowing that some people are safeguarding the environment assures us that there is hope in mankind and that not everything on Mother Earth is lost.

Nowadays, we lack keepers of the environment because we believe that modern technology ensures our future. That the intellect of human beings is enough to provide a solution to every predicament, and sufficient to generate innovations yielding a life of comfort and ease.

But time and time again, Mother Earth has proven us wrong. That there is no ultimate prevention of diseases caused and carried by animals and that disasters both natural and man-made could still happen at any time.

The Northwest Panay Peninsula National Park (NPP) straddles the provinces of Antique and Aklan and covers an area of approximately 12,009 hectares (29,680 acres). The park is well-known for its rich biodiversity, and a sanctuary of numerous species of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region. It contains a variety of landscapes, including woods, rivers, waterfalls, and limestone karst formations.

Serving as a refuge for many species, the NPPNP is essential in conserving biodiversity in the country and protecting the watersheds in Antique and Aklan which are necessary for agriculture and water supply.

As part of the Pista ng Gubat 2024, the NPPNP organized a Biodiversity Talk on June 22 at the Barangay Tingib, Pandan, Antique. Esteemed speakers and environment advocates, Dr. Rebecca Tandug-Barrios, President and Executive Director of PhilinCon Inc., and Dr. Porferio S. Bancaya, Professor VI of the University of Antique were invited to talk about natural heritage, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of the NPPNP.

The Pista ng Gubat 2024 aims to prompt awareness, educate, and encourage a call to action about the NPPNP being a valuable natural asset that requires ongoing efforts to protect and sustainably manage its diverse ecosystems. Hopefully, the Biodiversity Talk will create more keepers of the environment promoting environmental sustainability, conservation, and awareness.
