KALIBO, Aklan – Some people never learn. Layden Desbaro, a 51-year-old woman who had previously struck a plea deal, was caught yet again selling shabu in a sting operation by the Aklan Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) on May 25, 2024.
Desbaro, also known as "Daday", was busted selling two sachets of methamphetamine, commonly known as shabu.
The police recovered P4,000 in marked money and found another 16 sachets of the illegal substance during a body search.
Lt. Col. Ricky Bontogon, Kalibo’s chief of police, reported that the operation took place around 5 p.m. on Sampaguita Road Extension in Barangay Andagao.
Desbaro had been on the police radar for a long time, previously arrested for drug dealing and allegedly one of Aklan’s top suppliers.
Back in 2018, she negotiated a plea bargain, but it seems prison time didn’t change her ways.
Did Crime Pay Off?
The PDEU and Kalibo police had been monitoring her activities, suspecting she had resumed her drug trade after being released. Their suspicions were right on the money.
The seized drugs were traced back to suppliers in Manila and Iloilo, with transactions allegedly coordinated from inside the New Bilibid Prison.
Desbaro is now facing serious charges once more. She will be charged under Section 5 (sale of dangerous drugs) and Section 11 (possession of dangerous drugs) of Article II of Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
It's a classic case of crime not paying off, yet again. Hopefully, this time, the lesson sticks.
