Journalists in Zambales province have joined forces with the Zambales chapter of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) to safeguard press rights and bolster legal protections for media practitioners.

On January 16, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) Olongapo-Zambales chapter signed a landmark agreement with IBP Zambales to provide legal aid, rights education, and advocacy programs for journalists facing legal challenges.

NUJP Olongapo-Zambales Chair Joanna Rose Aglibot hailed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) as a “historic partnership” that underscores both organizations' commitment to justice, human rights, and press freedom.

The collaboration was deemed essential due to the growing risks journalists face when covering sensitive issues, such as the West Philippine Sea dispute.

Under the agreement, IBP Zambales will offer pro bono legal support to journalists who experience harassment, intimidation, or violations of press freedom while reporting on the West Philippine Sea.

The lawyers’ group will also conduct legal education and training sessions for NUJP members, equipping them with knowledge of their legal rights, remedies, and protections.

In turn, NUJP Olongapo-Zambales will assist in documenting issues and incidents related to the West Philippine Sea dispute, which will be used for case preparation and advocacy efforts.
