Proclamation No. 469 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on Apr. 18, 2018, declared April as Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino or Filipino Food Month.
The annual celebration aims to boost and promote the Philippines’ culinary traditions and treasures as part of the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
It is a month-long event that also supports various industries, local farmers, and agri-communities across the country.
This year’s theme is said to promote and pass on to the next generation the culinary traditions of the country and to support the industries that are part of it.
In line with the global initiative to curb the spread of Covid-19, Filipino Food Month 2021 will be celebrated through webinars, an online exhibition, and a filmmaking competition.
To return and continue its success from last year’s online event is “Philippines on a Plate,” a series of online talks that brings together Filipino farmers, chefs, gastronomic experts, and culinary historians from the local food industry.
Catch it online to listen to discussions how we can influence local food cultivation and establish preservation initiatives that can transform the eating landscape.
The 60-minute free online seminar is scheduled to run on all Tuesdays and Thursdays of April and will also be streamed on the Filipino Food Month social media pages.
Culinary Heritage
An online exhibition will also be making its rounds online on the topic of “Culinary Heritage of the Philippines” featuring 15 traditional cuisines from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The cuisines will include indigenous food from different cultural communities.
NCCA and CineKabalen have started to call for entries for CineKabalen Year 9 with the Culinary Cinema Section 2021. Winning films will premiere in the next edition of CineKabalen and will receive cash prizes.
For this year, a short film competition titled “Cuisinema/Kusinema”, will be held to encourage Filipino filmmakers from across the country to showcase and promote their own culinary heritage traditions and practices using only local ingredients.
