A man from Capiz could face charges after tearing up his wife’s passport in a bid to stop her from leaving the country at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 Wednesday, January 10.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Jonard Banate from Roxas City, Capiz, was immediately arrested by aviation police inside the airport after his wife sought the assistance of Philippine National Police - Aviation Security Unit.

According to the authorities, the victim, identified as 31-year-old Myren Detaro Onato, was on her way back to her job in Kuwait after vacationing in the Philippines.

However, Banate, who was apparently jealous of his wife, decided to follow her all the way to NAIA Terminal 1.

Onato was taken by surprise when her spouse unexpectedly grabbed her passport and boarding pass from her grasp and proceeded to tear them apart in front of her.

Banato also caused damage to her cellphone.

The OFW was advised to go to the Department of Foreign Affairs for passport replacement.

It was also learned that Onato had endured physical abuse from her husband, who would beat her in a jealous rage after bouts of drinking.

Banate could face six to 15 years in prison, as well as a fine of at least P60,000, for damaging his wife’s passport in violation of Republic Act No. 8239 (Philippine Passport Act of 1996).
