A Japanese national reportedly involved in telecom fraud and extortion schemes was recently arrested in a joint police operation in San Pablo City, Laguna last Monday, January 27.
The suspect, identified only as "Sasaki," 44 years old, was apprehended by joint operatives of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI) inside his residence in Barangay Soledad.
A report from the San Pablo City Police Station said the Japanese national was arrested by virtue of a warrant of deportation issued by the BI dated March 28, 2023.
The warrant was issued following an arrest warrant issued by the Tokyo Summary Court on January 20, 2023 against the suspect for Theft in Violation of Art. 235 of the Japanese Penal Code.
"Sasaki," an alleged member of the notorious "Luffy" criminal group, was involved in telecom fraud and extortion schemes targeting Japanese nationals, most of whom were elderly.
According to the Japanese Embassy in Manila, the suspect, along with his accomplices, used deception to steal ATM cards from their victims, most of whom were elderly.
They allegedly posed as police officers and Local Finance Bureau employees to obtain bank cards and information under the pretense of a police investigation.
The suspect is now detained at the BI facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, pending deportation proceedings.
