The “war on drugs” should start at steering the youth away from the temptations that could lead them to drug abuse.

That was the main message of the city government of San Pedro, Laguna as it joined the celebration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) last Wednesday, June 26.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was enacted by the United Nations in 1987 through Resolution No. 42/112. In the Philippines, the celebration of IDADAIT was institutionalized through Presidential Proclamation No. 264, issued by former President Corazon Aquino on June 1, 1988.

This event aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society, as well as to encourage stakeholders to achieve the global goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

Commitment against illegal drugs

The city government of San Pedro joined officials from the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in a "Lakad Kontra Droga" to the Pacita Astrodome.

There, a short program was conducted culminating in the signing of a "Pledge of Commitment" between various stakeholders, led by Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation President Antonio Raphael Ty, that affirms their continued support to the efforts of the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. to stamp out the illegal drugs trade.

A slogan and poster-making contest was also held, which was won by Karby Manoos from Barangay Pacita 2 with his poster entitled “Buhay na Malayo sa Droga, Buhay na Puno ng Pag-asa.”
