The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is entrusted with a crucial mandate: to ensure the safety, reliability, and longevity of the nation’s infrastructure.

Yet, time and again, the agency has fallen short—most glaringly in its failure to properly maintain roads, bridges, and public structures vital to the daily lives of millions of Filipinos.

Across the country, crumbling roads, dilapidated bridges, and malfunctioning drainage systems speak volumes about DPWH's negligence.

These are not mere inconveniences—they are hazards.

In recent months alone, several bridges have shown visible signs of decay, with no urgent repairs in sight.

Flooded highways during moderate rainfall expose the department's inaction on proper drainage.

Such deterioration is not the result of natural wear and tear alone—it is a direct consequence of poor maintenance and lack of accountability.

Even more alarming is that billions of pesos are allocated yearly to the DPWH, yet the public continues to suffer from substandard infrastructure.

Where is the transparency in how these funds are spent?

Why does it take public outcry or tragedy before any action is taken?

Infrastructure is not just about construction—it is about preservation.

Neglecting maintenance turns valuable national assets into liabilities. It disrupts commerce, endangers lives, and erodes public trust.

The DPWH must remember that its duty does not end when a ribbon is cut at an inauguration; it begins there.

We call on the agency’s leadership to take urgent corrective measures, conduct thorough audits, and commit to preventive maintenance as a non-negotiable policy.

The Filipino people deserve better than temporary fixes and empty promises.

The infrastructure of our nation is the backbone of its progress—DPWH must treat it as such.

Until then, every crack and collapse will stand as evidence of a government department failing its most basic duty.
