The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced the suspension of small boat operations in Eastern Visayas as Typhoon “Inday” continues to bring strong winds and dangerous sea conditions.

Gale warnings issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) prompted the PCG to stop boat trips, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew.

Under the directive, all motorboats and vessels weighing 15 gross tons and below are prohibited from sailing until weather conditions improve.

The PCG explained that this preventive measure follows Memorandum Circular No. 03-01, which requires the suspension of small craft operations during adverse weather to avoid accidents.

The agency emphasized that safety must come first, especially during typhoons when seas are unpredictable.

In Southern Leyte, several passenger and cargo vessel trips were canceled due to rough seas.

Among the affected routes were FastCat M17 operating between Maasin City and Surigao City, M/V OceanJet 88 serving Cebu City–Maasin City–Surigao City, and roll-on/roll-off vessels LCT Star Asia and LCT GT Express 1 connecting St. Bernard, Southern Leyte to Lipata, Surigao City.

These cancellations disrupted travel plans for many passengers and delayed the transport of goods.

The Coast Guard advised travelers to postpone non-essential trips and to monitor updates from Pagasa, PCG, and shipping companies before heading to ports.

Vessel owners and operators were also urged to secure their boats and stay alert to weather bulletins.

Authorities reminded the public that ignoring safety warnings could lead to tragic accidents at sea.

Pagasa warned that the combined effects of Typhoon “Inday” and the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” are producing strong to gale-force winds and very rough seas across Eastern Visayas.

The suspension of voyages will remain in place until conditions improve and authorities declare it safe for vessels to resume operations.

For now, residents and travelers are advised to remain cautious and prioritize safety over convenience.
