Calambeños lit every corner of the city with patriotism as they marked the 164th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, national hero and Calamba’s most honored son last June 19.
With the theme “Angat ang Lahing Calambeño, Dangal ng Bayan, Alay sa Mundo,” this year’s celebration of the Buhayani Festival served not only as a commemoration of Rizal’s life and sacrifices but also as a celebration of the Calambeños’ identity, excellence, and contribution to the country and the world.
Rizal Shrine events
The event started with wreath-laying ceremonies at different Rizal Monuments across Calamba City, with the central tribute held at the Rizal Shrine, his birthplace.
Local government officials, youth organizations, schools, and civic groups gathered to honor the ideals that Rizal stood for: education, service, and national pride.
Mayor Roseller “Ross” Rizal, a distant descendant of the national hero, were joined by Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez, Vice Mayor Angelito “Totie” Lazaro, Representative Charisse Anne “Cha” Hernandez-Alcantara, and members of the Sangguniang Panglungsod.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. also sent a wreath at the Rizal Shrine, symbolizing the national government’s commemoration of the birth of the country’s foremost national hero.
“Ipadama natin ang pagmamahal sa bayan, katulad ng walang hanggang pagmamahal na ipinakita ni Jose Rizal—sa pagsasakripisyo ng kanyang buhay na naging mitsa ng pagsisimula ng rebolusyon.” Rizal said in his speech as he urged Calambeños to embody genuine patriotism and selfless service.
Parade
Meanwhile, the streets of Calamba in the afternoon turned into a vibrant showcase of culture through the grand parade, which included Rizal’s relatives, Knights of Rizal, Watawat ng Lahi, City Government Officials, Civic Groups, Drum and Lyre bands, street dancers, and designed floats.
As the floats passed, Calambeños treated to a festive shower of candies and breads, adding cheer and excitement to the patriotic affair.
Celebrations were carried on at the City Plaza during the night with the much-anticipated Sayaw Indak Street Dancing Competition Awarding Ceremony.
The Alliance of Talents was awarded 3rd Place, followed by WalagWakan of United Uwisan Streetdance as 2nd Place. The crowd erupted in cheers as Team Pansol was crowned Grand Champion, also receiving the Best Costume Award for their exceptional presentation.
The night concluded with a spectacular fireworks show that lit up the sky in dazzling bursts of color, signifying togetherness, hope, and the undying flame of Rizal's legacy.
