Imus, Cavite film cameraman Paolo Emmanuel Magsino came to the Julian Felipe Hall of the Communication Arts Department of the De La Salle University-Dasmariñas City, Cavite prepared with his lecture on cinematography which he said he worked on between shoots of a new film.
This time, he is the director of the project for the production company of actress Rebecca Chuaunsu, the lead star in the award-winning film “Her Locket,” an entry to the Sinag Maynila Film Festival.
“Kagagaling ko lang nga po sa shooting. Wala pa akong tulog (I have just come from a shoot. I don’t have enough sleep yet),” chuckled Paolo, a veteran of six movies as Director of Photography, namely fellow Caviteño director Lester Dimaranan’s “Masasapano Now It Can Be Told” (2022), “Nelia” (2021) and “Lukas” (2019), Ronnie Ricketts’ “I, Will: The Doc Willie Ong Story” (2020 and “Exit Point” (2019) and Tony Y. Reyes’ “Boy Tokwa: Lodi ng Gapo” (2019).
Magsino landed the Chuaunsu pet project when he did the marketing materials like compilation of video clips, trailer, Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) etc. of “Her Locket.”
“May isang short film si Ma’am Rebecca tungkol din sa Chinese-inspired story niya. Ipinadirek niya sa akin pero nang tumagal, ginawa na naming full-length film kaya ‘yon ang ginagawa ko ngayon (She has a short film that deals with another Chinese-inspired story when she underwent a workshop with Brillante Ma. Mendoza. Then she asked me to direct but later, we transformed it to a full-length film so it’s the one I am doing right now),” he informed.
On the set, in lull, Paolo was able to squeeze the making of a power-point presentation on cinematography for the DLSU-Dasmariñas film students.
“Kaya pinagpuyatan ko rin (I also did it when I stayed late at night during the shoots),” he shyly broke into guffaws.
What came out was an enlightening and clear discussion of film photography.
“I made sure the pointers are practical for the students to work on especially on student films which could also help them when they are out to shoot professionally,” qualified the DoP who was discovered by Tony Reyes, the comedy director.
Magsino was confident in his lecture that he received many questions about his profession.
His word of advice: “Always put emotions in images.”
Caviteños are indeed proud of him.
