ILOILO CITY — In a move aimed at recognizing academic excellence and supporting the aspirations of high-achieving students, the Iloilo City Government implemented a groundbreaking ordinance that exempts outstanding senior high school graduates from taking the college entrance tests.
As an amendment to Regulation Ordinance No. 2020-106, this mandate honors senior high school students who graduated as valedictorians, salutatorians, or equivalent from entrance exams. This significant decision was formalized during the Sangguniang Panlungsod's regular session on June 5.
The amendment specifies that scholars must have achieved a final equivalent rating of eighty percent (80 percent) or above in competitive exams conducted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
However, an exemption is granted to top graduates from Iloilo City senior high schools. This exemption relieves them from the competitive exam requirement.
Tribute to Achievers
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas expressed gratitude to the City Council members who supported the amendment, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and rewarding achievers.
"We should reward those who are achievers. Salamat guid sa tanan nga nag boto fabor," he remarked.
This ordinance exemplifies a progressive approach to education, fostering a supportive environment for academic excellence. By exempting top-performing students from entrance exams, the city government not only acknowledges their hard work but also facilitates their transition to higher education.
This initiative is a testament to Iloilo City's commitment to nurturing and empowering its youth, ensuring that deserving scholars have the opportunity to pursue their dreams without unnecessary barriers.
As we celebrate this milestone, let us continue to champion initiatives that uplift and empower our future leaders.
