ILOILO CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways in Western Visayas (DPWH 6) opened on Friday the Iloilo River North Bank Road to address transportation challenges in the region.
Also known as the Iloilo Sunset Boulevard, the Iloilo River North Bank Road is also expected to boost tourism, attract investments, and stimulate economic growth in Iloilo City and neighboring areas.
"This initiative, envisioned by former senator Franklin Drilon, is designed to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and support economic growth in Iloilo City and neighboring municipalities and provinces in Region VI," DPWH 6 Assistant Regional Director Al Fruto, representing Director Sanny Boy Oropel, said in his project brief.
"This project was conceptualized to interconnect the road networks of Iloilo City, Antique, and Iloilo province in anticipation of the construction of Panay Guimaras Negros Bridge," he added.
The four-lane concrete pavement project spans five kilometers from Molo-Mandurriao Road (R. Mapa St.), traversing the Iloilo Business Park (Megaworld), and ends at Oton-Pakiad-Mandurriao Road in Cagbang, Oton, providing a direct route to Tigbauan, Iloilo.
Among its features are slope protection works, reinforced concrete pipe culvert, drainage systems, a one-meter-wide median island adorned with 80-watt solar-powered LED double-arm roadway lighting, bike lanes, and four bi-level concrete viewing decks.
In his message, former Senate president Franklin Drilon said the Iloilo Sunset Boulevard features scenic views of sunsets, migratory birds, and serene fishing spots along the Iloilo River.
The Iloilo Sunset Boulevard was launched in 2021 with an allocation of PHP1.26 billion, funded through Drilon’s initiative, with the help of the office of Iloilo City Lone District Rep. Julienne Baronda. (PNA)
