ILOILO CITY — Upgrades to the port facility in Barangay Loboc, Lapaz district were recently unveiled by the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) with a mission to boost trade efficiency in Western Visayas.
The Visayas Container Terminal (VCT) will definitely transform the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex (ICPC) into a top-notch maritime hub. "We're thrilled to lead the charge in elevating the Iloilo port to world-class standards," shared Timothee Jeannin, VCT's executive director.
Part of the transformation includes prioritizing local workers and contractors, believing that tapping into local talent will not only enhance operations but also contribute to community growth. "We're thankful for the chance to drive economic growth in the Visayas and uplift the communities we serve," Jeannin added.
Global Standards
Since launching operations last month, VCT has made significant strides in infrastructure and productivity.
Handling around 40 vessels, including container ships and bulk carriers, the terminal showcases ICTSI's commitment to global port standards.
Jeannin expressed gratitude to the hardworking team behind VCT's success, highlighting their efforts in renovating facilities and establishing operational systems.
"Our team's dedication has been instrumental in getting things off the ground," he emphasized.
P10.53-B Project To Follow
This progress follows the green light from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to proceed with the P10.53-billion containerized VCT project.
Securing a 25-year concession to develop and manage the terminal, ICTSI sees this as a vital step in bolstering its presence in the Philippines and unlocking the economic potential of Western Visayas.
Looking ahead, VCT aims to enhance terminal productivity further by investing in equipment and infrastructure. Plans include deploying mobile harbor cranes, expanding reefer stacks, and improving bulk cargo operations.
Furthermore, VCT is exploring opportunities to collaborate with domestic and international shipping lines, aiming to make the Iloilo port a more attractive destination for cargo.
"Our goal is to broaden shipping connections and enhance trade opportunities in the Western Visayas region," Jeannin stressed.
Empowering Communities
Beyond business goals, VCT is committed to empowering local communities by prioritizing local hiring and engagement with local contractors. By leveraging local resources, VCT hopes to support economic growth and community development.
In essence, VCT's journey epitomizes ICTSI's dedication to transforming ports into vibrant economic gateways.
With continued progress and community engagement, the VCT is poised to leave a lasting impact on the region's trade landscape.
